Safeguarding Cultural Heritage – Our actions – ETHNOCOLOR
Following are the lastest actions done for the safeguarding of the intangible heritage:
  • Action 1: Permanent exhibition in the Bulgarian village showing the new generation practising polyphonic songs, during a customary feast of easter time, that the last 9 grandmothers has been teaching to them. This exhibition shows the customs transmition between the new generation and the oldest. This archaic polyphony, dances and rituals from the Shoplouk region are part of the intangible heritage of Unesco since 2008.
  • Action 2: Maintaining ancestral ritual ceremonies in a tiny village of Burkina faso by buying some animals for sacrifices (bull, chicken, sheep, goat)
Our aim is to multiply actions in other areas of the globe
where there is a need to maintain intangible heritage.
If you have any ideas of actions that need to be done somewhere.
Please contact us and we will try to do our best to realise it.

What was our objective and actions?
Main Objective: Maintaining Bulgarian customs transmition by making an exhibition of their local tradition in their village
First: Making a reportage on the annual feast where the youngest practise polyphonic songs learnt by the oldest. Only 9 last grand mothers know this traditionnal polyphonic songs
Second: Build up the exhibition with 40 frames in PVC and wood
Third: Bring the frames to Bulgaria for exhibition in the local cultural center and in the houses of the singers
Final Objective: New generation can keep the archives of their festivities and transmit it to the next generation again and again.
Transmition is essential to keep alive their intangible heritage.

The Lazarovden Festivity Exhibition
This festivity is dedicated to youth and fertility – young girls, pastures, fields and woods.

What is Lazarovden Festivity about ?
Lazarovden is an event in the life of every young girl. On this occasion, she can demonstrate to her village community that she can become a grown-up maiden. During this festivity, the girls wish happiness to each villagers by singing traditionnal polyphonic songs.

Why preserving this tradition ?
Only 9 Grannies know very well these polyphonic songs. The transmition of their knowledge to the youngest is essential. Their group of multi-generational female vocal ensemble was founded in 1939 and won the European Folk Art Award in 1978. It was declared a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.

What was our objective and actions?
In Burkina Faso, traditions are very strong, nonetheless, as anywhere else, changes and evolution with the society occur.
The animists who are the spirit and soul of old believes are less and less.
New generation become muslim or catholic and don’t practise as much their oldest tradition.
So only a few old men are left to accomplish specific ceremonies during their annual festivities and can practise sacrifices of animal to call the spirits.
Because they are so little left, they can’t afford to buy a bull, a sheep and a goat to make their sacrifices.
Therefore, since more than 30 years, they didn’t manage to make these sacrifices.
Our action was to buy these animals to permit them to accomplish their practises during their annual Sagado festivity.

Sagado: Calling for the rain festivity
Once a year, just before the beginning of the rainy season, all the masks of each clan in the Dafi community participate in a festivity called Sagado.
The goal is to regenerate the human community through participation in the rebirth of plant life and thereby to prepare for the coming of the new rains.

The masks of each clan move through the village visiting each well drilling or water source and clan spirit house in each neighbourhood in turn, to honour their ancestors.
In this way, they purify the village and by means of several mask performances on the fields, they celebrate the renewal of the nature with the villagers.

What is Sagado about ?
Sagado is an celebration invoking the blessings of all ancestors. The spirits are requested to bring an early and abundant rainy season and to provide goods and well being for the entire clan during the coming year.

Why preserving this tradition ?
The masks’ function, known as a totemic spirit of the clan, is to ensure prosperity and protection. It is an essential link with the ancestors who are very respected by the community. Therefore, the masks link up human beings, nature and ancestors’ spirits.
Todays, the number of animists in this village has decreased to 1% of the population and the Dafi population represents 1% of the population of Burkina Faso.
This ceremonial event tends to disappear little by little, simply because the number animists is reducing. The new generation becomes either Muslim or Catholic.
To maintain their traditions, they need to buy animals for their sacrifices but their budget becomes much lower since the number of animist is lower.
